Performing a Sky digibox system software update in Valencia

Performing a Sky digibox system software update in Spain

In most cases you will not have to do a manual Sky digibox system software update, as the Sky boxes will automaticlly update the software when ever new software becomes avaialble from Sky.

You may have to perform a manual Sky digibox system software update if your Sky digibox has not been powered on or getting a signal from the satellite for about 6 months.

Ideally the best time of the day to do this is first thing in the morning - when signals strengths are the best, and you are able to receive the 11778 main default transponder frequency, as this is the frequency where the software updates are located.

1) Put the box into Standby mode. (red light mode)
2) Disconnect the power to the receiver
3) Locate the button on the front of the Receiver, named "Back Up". ( ON THE RECEIVER NOT ON THE REMOTE!)
4) Press and hold down the "Back Up" button.
5) WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN, reconnect the power to the receiver (do not release the back-up button yet).
6) About 20 seconds after reconnecting power, all four coloured lights will illuminate on the front of the receiver. If the TV is switched to Sky a message will also appear on screen.. "Updating System Software".
7) Only after the four lights illuminate and the message appears should you release the back-up button.
8) After about 10 minutes the receiver will return to "standby" (i.e.. red LED only).
9) Leave the receiver in standby for 1 minute as it carries out a self check.
10) Switch receiver out of standby (green LED illuminates).
11) The receiver will take a few minutes "Searching For Listings".
You may have to assists the receiver in booting up by using the "Changing Default Transponder" method

12) Your digibox should now be operating on the latest available version of software.

Do not unplug your Skybox from the mains supply or satellite dish during the software upgrade or permanent damage could be done and your box rendered unusable

Do not attempt a firmware upgrade if your Sky Digibox already has the latest firmware version - it will make no difference!

Grand Prix of Europe - Valencia 2011

This years Formula One Grand Prix of Europe, also known as the Valencia F1 Grand Prix 2011 takes place this year on the 24th to 27th June 2011.

It takes place on the Valencia Street Circuit, a a semi-permanent street circuit in Valencia, Spain designed around the marina and port area of Valencia.

The track is 5.419 kilometres (3.367 mi) long and incorporates a total of 25 turns – 11 right-handers and 14 left-handers. It is unique as the track has a bridge crossing across the entrance to the marina. It has been critisised by many due to the lack of overtaking places. In fact in the 2009 race there was NO overtaking at all during the race.

Hopefully the recent rule changes and the Drag Reductions System DRS makes Valencia a bit more exciting for the spectator.

However, if you cannot make it to the race, you can watch it all LIVE on BBC TV in Spain. You can watch the Valencia Grand Prix on the BBC Sports Interactive streams. These can be received on a small 80cm satellite dish in Valencia, and does not require a big 2.4m Portuguese satellite dish to receive UK TV in Valencia.

To access the BBC Sportds service on a Sky box on a small satellite dish in Valencia, Spain, you need to go to the BBC News channel, Sky TV channel 503. Press the RED button, to go to the BBC Interactive TV service. Type in "3001", which is the page number for the BBC Sports service. Once the multiscreen has loaded up you can choose which LIVE sports stream to watch.

What size satellite dish do I need for Sky TV in Valencia?

What size satellite dish do I need for Sky TV in Valencia?

Well at the end of the day the best satellite dish size you need depends on what UK TV channels you actually want to receive.

In Valencia, much of the Sky TV channels can be received on an 80cm satellite dish!

Yes an 80 cm satellite dish.

For example, an 80cm satellite dish can receive Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2 and Sky Sport 3 in Valencia all day 24/7.
Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports News will need a bigger dish, either a 1.8m Portuguese satellite dish (sometimes incorrectly refered as a 1.9m satellite dish!), or ideally a 2.4m Portuguese satellite dish.

With the correct size satellite dish (1.8m or 2.4m Portuguese satellite dish), and the correct Sky digibox, ALL of the Sky Movie channels are available 24/7 in Valencia.

In some areas a 1.8m Portuguese satellite dish will be enough for reception of the BBC1 and BBC2 and BBC HD channels in Valencia. Ideally a 2.4mm Portuguese satellite dish is prefered, should budget and space be available.

Ideally a SkyHD+ satellite digibox is required. The Sky HD boxes have a better and more sensitive tuner inside, and perform better that the "legendary" PAce 2600, renounded to be the best Sky digibox for Spain. Many UK TV satellite channels can be received with No Sky subscription.

Best Default Transponder Frequency Settings for a Sky box in Valencia

When a Sky receiver / digibox / box is turned on the first time the first thing the box tries to do is, amongst other things, to download approximately 6 hours of EPG information from a specific default frequency (or Transponder) from the satellite. The Sky digibox must have this information to start to work and allow you to watch Sky TV..

Unfortunately, the default frequency (transponder) that the decoder is initially set to look for (11778) is one of the weaker signals in Spain and the Costa Blanca, especially during the afternoons, even on a 2.4m dish! So should you experience one of Spain's frequent power cuts during this period, your Sky digibox may be unable to find this frequency, fail to boot up, and display the on screen message "No Satellite Signal Being Received".

Therefore, to assist the digibox to receive the bare minimum information it requires boot up the default frequency must be changed to another frequency to enable the initial information download.

In the Valencia area, and its surrounding towns like Oliva and Denia, I have fond that the best satellite dishes for Sky TV in Valencia, are the Portuguese satellite dishes.

The best performing 1.8m satellite dish for Sky TV in Valencia and surrounding areas, is not the so called "professional" Famaval satellite dish, but the other so called "economical" satellite dish. Both dishes are from Portugal, but I have found that the so called "economy" satellite dish, easily outperforms the so called "professional" Famaval satellite dish.

However, I have found that the best satellite dish for the area is the Famaval 2.4m satellite dish.
